Our group of 4 stopped here at mid-afternoon on a Sunday. The place was not very busy, so we sat at the bar and enjoyed chatting with the bartender. The pub is located in a storefront setting in downtown Detroit, and the interior has all of the appeal of a neighborhood bar. I was in this brewpub 5 years ago on a tour of the ruins of Detroit. The downtown (and all of Detroit) was so depressing that I should have had more than one beer... but I was more eager to get back to the hotel and out of town the next day.

Opened in 2003, the Detroit Beer Company is known as the Brewery on Broadway, located in the restored Hartz Building. Patrons can enjoy handcrafted ales and lagers along with pizza, pasta, salads, sandwiches and more.

The vintage Hartz Building on Broadway across from the Detroit Opera House has been handsomely renovated and restored to house the spin-off of the Rochester Mills and Royal Oak breweries. The bones of the old building, including rosy bricks, are evident, giving the two-floor setting a distinction a new building wouldn't provide.
