Descanso roughly translates to “rest” and that’s just what you’ll do at the gorgeous Descanso Gardens, a stone’s throw from Pasadena in the hilly borough of La Canada. Newspaper publisher E. Manchester Boddy developed the 160 acres in 1937, planting a camellia forest that has grown to be North America’s largest with 700 varieties for a total of 34,000 plants. You’ll feel like a wood nymph as...
Camellias -- evergreen flowering shrubs from China and Japan -- were the passion of amateur gardener E. Manchester Boddy, who began planting them here in 1941. The shrubs now share the limelight with a 5-acre International Rosarium, home to...

Best place for kids to romp.

General Admission is only $8.00 and allows patrons access to all areas of the gardens. It offers...

Also popular is the five-acre International Rosarium, a magnificent themed display of roses from around the world. Indoor exhibits offer a great deal to explore as well, and the Hospitality House contains a terrific...
The gardens won't accept credit cards for admission, but will take them at the Boddy House and gift shop.
The Festival of Flowers is held every March through June, but for optimum splendor visit towards the end of April. Check Descanso's bloom schedule for more information.
