A soothing setting in soft shades of off-white, gray and blue is sparked with well-chosen framed needlework from Cyprus and reproductions of busts, vases and platters displayed on a ceiling-level shelf. Hanging lamps in verdigris and white add a Mediterranean touch.

Molly Abraham, Detroit News Restaurant Critic: The Cypriot influence here comes from proprietors Vassos Avgoustis. whose wife Eleni is of Greek heritage. While the menu is mostly such Greek favorites as spinach pie, moussaka, baked lamb and stuffed grape leaves, there are some dishes that depart from the other restaurants on the Greektown block, including seftalies, rolls of spiced pork and... more

Fancy a stuffed vine leaf or three The Cyprus Taverna is an excellent restaurant that offers quality food that takes you directly to the beautiful island country in the Mediterranean via taste and a friendly serving staff. There are plenty of similar eateries around the Greektown area, but with its reasonable prices, the Cyprus Tavern easily competes. --Brett Callwood

In Short Owner Vassos Avgoustis welcomes patrons into his cozy room. The crowd is lively and service is brisk. The usual Greek specialties and some less well-known, such as tyropitakia (cheese triangles in filo) or kalamarakia (fried squid). The specialty is a Cypriot version of lamb, klestikon. Avgolemono soup is based on homemade chicken broth. The skordalia is the best in... more

Widely considered Greektown's best Greek restaurant, Cyprus Taverna serves up all the requisite Greek dishes -- moussaka, dolmathes (stuffed grape leaves), and gyros -- as well as a number of Cypriot specialties, vegetarian meals, and a selection of Greek beers and wines. Portions are hearty. Aegean fossils and Cypriot folk art decorate the walls.

Having grown up less than an hour from Chicago's Greektown, my personal bias didn't leave me expecting much when I stepped into this place across from a casino in Detroit. I was pleasantly shocked at some of the most delicious food I've ever eaten, and his gem with its slight Cyprean bias on longtime cultural favorites will leave you delighted. The service and friendly atmosphere will only... more

I am Greek so I know Greek food and any god food for that matter. Yes, the owner is nice and friendly but the food is very bad and in some cases cannot be eaten. Nothing tastes like Greek food and the spinach pies (spanakopita) were awful. Generally it is very piced and bd quality. The bathrooms are very dirty and the upper area where the bathrooms are stink really bad. It also looks as if... more

Cyprus is such a great place to visit, it's been in Greektown forever.
They have fantastic greek food. Saganaki is great and so is the lamb. The value for the money is very good. Most menu items are so large that they can be shared. The staff is friendly and the kitchen is very fast.
