If the hunger pangs strike you in the middle of a trip to the Lower East Side, head straight to Chickpea. A no-frills destination offering quality middle-eastern fare at low prices. The Chicken Shwarmas are juicy and high on taste. The Falafel sandwiches are a hot favorite and so is the creamy humus. There are pita breads and yummy authentic sauces to pick from as well. In Short With gleaming copper countertops and a lounge area in back, Chickpea stands out from the St. Marks milieu. The small spot offers falafel and shawarma, as well as the hybrid "shawafel," but also features fresh-baked pita bread, compose-your-own salads drawn from an array of ingredients, a soup of the day, house-made baklava and other desserts.

They've ruined Chickpea

What have they done? It's not good now. They've made all falafel healthy and baked. It's like eating raw falafel. They used to have the best falafel in the East Village and we'd eat here once a week. It's all gone. And it takes much longer to get your now awful baked falafel.
