Information from the business
A romantic atmosphere of an elegant hacienda with exuberant, lavish service and intriguing gourmet flavors created by a celebrated chef from Mexico City. Mexican cuisine with French-style presentation is the best way to describe Chef Eduardo Baeza's cooking at Candelas. Chef Baeza began his culinary career at the age of 18 at Maxime's, an exquisite French restaurant in Mexico City. There he...

Upscale Mexican cuisine is presented with classic French service. Try the ceviche for a divine beginning with the day's fresh fish smoked, marinated in olive oil and lemon and served with tomatoes and onions on a bed of mango-basil vinaigrette. Other seafood standouts include Chilean sea bass with grape sauce and wild mushrooms, and a twist on black bean soup made with homemade chicken stock...

The scents and flavors of imaginative Mexican cuisine permeate this handsome, romantic little hideaway in the shadow of San Diego's tallest residential towers. Candles glow everywhere around the small, comfortable dining room. There isn't a burrito or taco in sight. Fine openers such as cream of black bean and beer soup, and salad of watercress with bacon and pistachios warm diners up for local...

Tips About This Business
The gated table in the wine cellar is up for grabs every night at no extra charge. Ask for it when you make a reservation or upon arrival if it's empty.
Horton Plaza's garage is the closest mainstream lot. Buy a pack of gum and validate at Longs as you leave the structure and head south five blocks to the restaurant.

The Scene Dark and moody, the brown painted walls, rustic wood stools and exposed ceiling beams contribute the feeling of an old colonial Mexican castle. Red and purple accent pillows, hand-embroidered table cloths and hundreds of candles enhance the romantic look in each of the four rooms. On the menu, it's upscale Mexican cuisine presented with classic French service. Try the...

You won't find chips and salsa at Candelas---this Mexican restaurant is unlike most in San Diego (or elsewhere in the U.S.). The alta cocina at this romantic downtown spot features indigenous Mexican ingredients such as nopales, corn, avocados, epazote and a variety of chiles---all skillfully prepared and artfully arranged with nary a margarita in sight. The many candles (hence the name) and...

We have been to this restaurant twice on different Sundays and the hour when they stop serving breakfast has been different both times. They started having a buffet on Sunday. It looks good but is pricey. Some of the items on the menu are more reasonable and very tasty. The portions are substantial. I'll try this restaurant again but I'm not sure what to expect.
One of the best upscale Mexican restaurants I have been too! I am usually not a big fan of Mexican food until I came here! The calamari was so delicious and the jumbo shrimp and coconut was so amazing! I highly recommend this place for anyone who loves Mexican food, even though it is pricey the food is so amazing!
This is a real Mexican restaurant, not Rubio's or Taco Bell. Candelas is a New York or Los Angeles quality place. Believe it or not you have to pay for quality food. He should move to LA, San Diego is a second tier city and does not have enough people who know quality food when they taste it. There are many rubes in SD, they probably wrote the other reviews.
I started with the Calamares...
