What the community has to say about Cafe Sabarsky

Information about this business (5)

Inside the Neue Galerie, this elegant Viennese cafe by Kurt Gutenbrunner is a well known and loved spot for lunch, brunch, coffee, and cake.

This cafe is named after the founder of the Neue Galerie museum Serge Sabarsky, and is an ode to the Viennese cafes where intellectuals are often found engaged in discussion. The Austrian menu includes Sabarsky Fruhstuck, linzertorte and strudgel. The decor, comprising classic furniture and lighting, is befitting the premises. A grand piano sets the stage for classical music on Wednesdays,...

In 2001, chef Kurt Gutenbrunner was asked to open a café based on the fin-de-siècle Kaffeehaus to accompany the opening of t...he Neue Galerie, the showcase for Ronald S. Lauder and Serge Sabarsky's lifelong devotion to German and Austrian art. Gutenbrunner took this opportunity to open Café Sabarsky, which features approachable Viennese fare (including an acclaimed, traditional breakfast menu)...

Editorial reviews from the web (6) view all

Kurt Gutenbrunner's "civilized" Neue Galerie cafes transport you to "fin de siècle Vienna", with "exquisite pastries" and "vonderful" Austrian savories dispensed in "glorious", "old-worldy" settings; Sabarsky is the "prettier" of the pair while Fledermaus is "easier to get into", but both are "pretty expensive."

90

Kurt Gutenbrunner's Austrian café inside the Neue Galerie has impeccable service, a beautiful dining room with period objects and lavishly upholstered banquettes, and fine cuisine. Especially gemütlich (pleasant) is the breakfast service. Cakes and pastries are also superior. Classical music Wednesday and Thursday evenings as well as Friday afternoons are an additional pleasure.

I visited for my Austrian hubby's birthday. We've been living in NY for a while, but never visited an Austrian restaurant - so this was my bday treat for him.
We Really Really REALLY wanted to like this place. We would've come here on a regular basis as long as it was okay.
Unfortunately, we experienced the most disappointing service...

The interior of a 19th century, dark wood panels, flooring and ceiling were transported and recreated in a mansion on 5th Avenue which also houses the Neue Galerie, which houses and has exhibitions of the best of Germanic art. The food and coffee are exactly what you would eat...
