Texas's largest independent maintains a stock of over 200,000 titles, plus an eclectic array of non-book items that elicit everything from laughs to groans. All the employees seem genuinely happy to be there, and are universally helpful and knowledgeable. Like much of the rest of Austin, Book People has a fun, relaxed and slightly off-center personality. It's no wonder, when you consider that... more

Walk in and breathe deeply. You're within range of 300,000 titles, all arranged on three floors, along with a handy coffeehouse and complete music department. This is one of the bookstore-as-community places, where shoppers are encouraged to put their feet up and read, or to sit at a convenient desk and copy a recipe from the latest cookbook. Children gather for story time every week, and a... more

A literary mover and shaker, BookPeople has books and magazines for all, and sells gifts and jewelry. It also serves as a popular stop-off for author tours. Austin's New Age bent makes those authors a major draw, but they also bring in major names like Gregory Maguire, Joyce Carol Oates, and Neil Gaiman. Many of their sections also have a decorative theme, such as the Buddhism department, which... more

Expanded in the mid-1990s from its New Age roots but remaining stubbornly quirky and independent, this store stocks more than 250,000 titles ranging over a wide variety of subjects. BookPeople also has an extensive array of self-help videos, books on tape, and gift items (the KEEP AUSTIN WEIRD T-shirt is their bestseller). Lots of intimate sitting areas and an espresso bar prevent this huge... more

If you love books, just go to this place. In a world full of chain/franchised businesses Bookpeople is making a difference by making this bookshop a part of our daily life in Austin. 2 Story building. Just visit them, browse their, more than decent, collections and find a nice spot to read.

Judgemental Purse Checkers

I usually love this store. But I found the last time I went in, they lady at the desk when you first walk into the store was very judgemental about checking my purse. After uncomfortably handing over my purse, I wonder why she's not checking my friends purse who's was the same size as mine. Then I look around at books and cards, and notice 3 people around me with bags bigger than mine on! So my... more

I love Book People. It has all the benefits that a major bookstore would have, without losing its local Texas character. It is a great place to hang out or browse. The books are a tad pricey but they are comparable to other major chain book stores.
