Blackbird

A touch of class

I had one of the most amazing dinners hear last week. The rabbit appetizer was to die for. The main course, the filet w/ caramelized onions and grilled asparaguses on the side was amazing. The wine from the Napa Valley was a bit overpriced, but it made the meal. The staff was a delete to deal with. I would definitely recommend this establishment.

Gourmet magazine named this tres hot spot on Randolph Street one of the 50 best restaurants in the country in 2001. And for our money, it still is. Chef Paul Kahan, who won the James Beard Foundations award for Best Chef-Midwest in 2004, serves contemporary American cuisine that relies on pristine produce and simple, pretty presentation.

Ultra-trendy restaurant on Randolph Street where the minimalist interior is not matched by the food: the kitchen dishes up rich, saucy New American fare, the aroma from delights like the mussel, shrimp, clam and fish bouillabaisse entrée and creamy foie gras appetiser float through the space and warm the heart. The interior is supper club swank, with cherry-stained floors, a long banquette... more

Space age in feel, this narrow, minimalist West Loop restaurant showcases highly seasonal fare its uber-hip following is all too happy to lap up, in close proximity, from their mod bucket-style chairs. On-point servers scuttle from sleek the white bar to the bank of tables lining the left wall, delivering thought-provoking wines that make sauerkraut bisque with house-made squab prosciutto... more

Paul Kahan won the James Beard Foundation's 2004 award for Best Chef Midwest and the consistently huge crowds at this nicely appointed room know it. The emphasis here is on carefully prepared dishes that are arranged like artpieces, so much so that piercing one with your fork feels like a violation of something sacred. Prada-clad foodies and their Marc Jacobs-draped dates dine on cleverly... more

This high-flyer on the West Side's hot restaurant row draws patrons as chic as the austerely architectural storefront. They crowd the sleek bar, waiting to settle down on high-tech chairs or the high-backed banquette at tables so close together only someone who eats like a bird can squeeze between them. But no one who eats like a bird could fully appreciate chef Paul Kahan's sophisticated... more

I have been going here since they opened and liked it better then. Now, it seems like the servers have bad attitudes. The tables are so close together that it is hard talk privately. The wine list is way overpriced. I had a glass of wine that was not good and when I sent it back they treated me like I was crazy. The food is usually still pretty good but the attitudes need to change!

Some of my friends recommended this restaurant but is was not a good experience. The service was poor and the food was terrible with the exception of the endive salad. As a main course I tried the "Black Bird" sandwich which consisted of a tiny piece of white fish on a soggy piece of toast served with some chips. The fish tasted like it had been marinated in spice mustard for 2 days. The worst... more
