Yesterday's Mall of Tomorrow

Review Rating
The 1980's live at the BevCen (but not in a good way.) In the last decade, new construction at the Grove and the Century City malls have given the BevCen serious competition for aesthetically-minded mall rats. Many of the first run movies don't go to the BevCen any more and foot traffic is a little scarce some days. The BevCen is currently attracting new vendors and building more shops but it is not an architectual simulation (like the Grove) or architectural stimulation (like Century City.) The food court is OK and the theaters are getting better. For fun, I see the animals in the pet store every time that I stop by.

The Beverly Center Mall is housed in a mammoth, eight-story behemoth of a building, with wavy, Plexiglas tube escalators which snake up its sides. It's the place for fashion conscious kids and their families. The shopping mall itself occupies only the upper three stories of the structure (levels 6 through 8); the bottom five floors are taken up by parking areas (except for the ground floor, which ... more

Perched like Zeus on the Acropolis, the Beverly Center looks down from its nine-story address on Beverly and La Cienega Boulevards like the LA god of shopping. One of LA's premier shopping centers also boasts a level of retail shopping most people normally don't associate with the urban mega mall. Stores like Louis Vuitton, Hugo Boss and Dolce and Gabbana's D & G sit just down the mall from ... more

Above eight levels of parking and chi-chi shopping, this trendsetting shopping haven even offers panoramic views on the Rooftop Terrace. In Short An eight-story behemoth that towers over La Cienega, the Beverly Center is truly L.A.'s one-stop-shopping destination. Macy's and Bloomingdale's anchor the nearly one million square feet of real estate, which includes trendy eateries, a Loews Cineplex, and the country's very first Hard Rock Cafe. The mall was very nice and had a great choice of stores to choice from. Whatever you do valet your car. The extra money will save you the extra hassle.

The Beverly Center mall in West Hollywood (or is it Beverly Hills) is a great mall. It's convenient (for this West Hollywood resident) and has the main stores I love, like Macy's and D&G. The food court, thankfully, is hidden way in back, way upstairs, cuz it's hideous. Otherwise, I like the Beverly Center quite a bit. Parking tip...go up to the 5th floor and pay attention to where the escalators ... more

Although this mall does an excellent job of mixing up big name stores with smaller boutiques, the atmosphere feels more like a museum than a place to shop and have fun, which is what fashion is really all about. The hugeness of the mall intimidated me and I just didn't want to touch anything for fear I would break something.
