Papa Hemingway would have approved of this "highly energetic" 14th Street Corridor American gastropub that offers "strong drinks, inspired snacks and a brunch that can banish any trace of a hangover"; the "innovative" menu comes at "casual-bar" prices, and even if the servers can be a bit "too cool", overall this one's got "character."
Mike Benson saw the crowds flocking to his bar St. Ex--now a neighborhood staple--and decided there was a market on 14th Street for another watering hole. Bar Pilar, named after Hemingway's boat...
Bar Pilar is one of my top brunch spots in the city. It always has a chill vibe, even when it's busy. I love the creative and seasonal options, although the constantly changing menu has its drawbacks when favorite dishes get cycled off, or for people who have specific dietary needs and like to …
A charming spot, with a nice cocktail hour vibe that leads easily into dinner. Food is good, and knowledgeable servers can guide food choices. Relaxed atmosphere, with professional service, and quality food. We've been before and we'll be back.
Bar staff were excellent and very helpful. I did not eat there because the menu was too meat oriented and included organ meats, which I avoid. But the bar was excellent.
I enjoyed the meal that we got there but three of their specialties were sold out at 7:15 on a Saturday night. That seems unbelievable and unacceptable. I wouldn't go there again for that reason alone
This is our second visit to Bar Pilar and we greatly enjoyed our meal on both visits. The food is very good and the staff great as well. It was a colder night on this past visit and the atmosphere upstairs was just perfect - warm & cozy!
Inspired by Ernest Hemingway and named for his beloved boat, Pilar is a neighborhood restaurant that has been a mainstay of 14th street for over a decade. Executive Chef Jesse Miller helms the kitchen turning out an eclectic menu inspired by local farms and New American cuisine with a focus on seasonal organic produce. The simple yet inventive dishes change frequently, but that’s part of the...

Weekends are busy, but not unbearable. During the week, it's quieter and a good place to grab a cocktail, eat a nice meal and chat with the talkative bartenders.
For Cocktail Sessions each Tuesday, manager Adam Bernbach presents a list of completely original cocktails to customers. He'll literally whip and shake them up for customers, but the wait time is lengthy, so patience is key.
Skip the nearby pizza places and save your appetite for Bar Pilar's mussels. A Clipper City IPA and a bowl of mussels, or any of the European-inspired seafood items, will make your bar visit feel more like a seaside vacation.
Ask the bartenders questions about some of lesser-known American beers on draft--beers so good, they'll wash the name Budweiser right out of your brain.
