Alon's Bakery

Addictive

Review Rating
Great assortment of very fresh breakfast pastries, breads, deli foods, prepared sandwiches, flowers, hot and cold beverages. The cheese offerings are the best in the city, and the cheese counter folks are knowledgeable. Many imported edibles. Top quality ingredients overall, but the deli has some dishes that do not make the cut (ej. I could not find much seafood in the seafood lasagna). Definitely for foodies. A one-stop shop for great picnic fixins. They even carry alcohol. Pricey but a worthwhile indulgence, even if often!

A warm airiness fills this popular neighborhood bakery. Baskets brim with husky fresh-baked loaves; golden croissants hover on a cooling rack. Pastries, cookies and scones stock the display cases. Budget-free party planners, gift hunters and novice gourmands drop in, while stroller-jogging Morningsiders and cookie monsters sneak out. Strictly counter service or take out, Alon's offers, along with its seasonal breads (such as challah for Passover), interesting sandwiches which elsewhere would be called merely Yuppie. They also prepare traditional desserts like Napoleons, raspberry white chocolate cheesecake and cappuccino torte. Make sure to try a cup of their extraordinary coffee.

VIRGINIA HIGHLAND . Alon's lunches are great for one main reason: the sublime, fresh-baked bread. Challah, Country French, rye and croissants are done to perfection. Top these with creative mixtures of fresh vegetables, flavorful cheeses and hearty meats, and you have a sandwich that's nothing short of unforgettable. If you love to browse tray after tray of bakery-fresh desserts – and who... more

This Morningside neighborhood bakery and sandwich shop first opened in 1992. Foodies have been flocking there ever since. Why? Alon's is the best bakery in the area -- the breads are artisanal loaves made the European way, and the pastries are the most exquisite in the area. Sable cookies are buttery delights; the fruit tarts and mocha tortes are as delicious as they are beautiful. Over the... more

At first I thought the desserts were excellent although quite a bit pricey. My second experience, however was not very well... There is a lemon-merengue pie on the website but when I called to order it, the man argued with me that there wasn't and that they Couldn't even make one. The previous review of the attitude there being rude and "all that" was correct. I guess the awards have gone to... more

I heard raves and raves about Alon's and finally went. Totally disappointed. The sandwiches were mediocre, not that this fact had any impact on pricing. I would eat at Panera Bread a million times before I would go back here.

No idea about the pastries though... more
