Oysters, oysters, oysters

I came here in 2004 while driving across the country. Sitting here at the bar eating freshly shucked oysters and drinking beer was one of the culinary highlights of the trip. I had a lot of good food on that trip so this is saying a lot. If you want oysters in New Orleans, you need to eat here, period.

2007 UPDATE - Dudes and dudettes, if there is a oyster and fried catfish heaven, it would be look like this. The clouds would part, and I would eat oysters and fried catfish. I went back here three years later and it was just as good. Screw the hype - it's good here.

This timeless New Orleans establishment has been popular since the management first opened its doors in 1910. Located just off Boubon Street, the seafood house offers its own twist on New Orleans cuisine in a noisy, casual atmosphere. The food is not to be missed. The popular neon sign beckons locals and tourists to the trademark oysters at an unbeatably low price. If oysters do not tempt your taste ... more

Loud, crowded and full of life, this seafood haven draws locals and tourists who stand in line for top-notch shooters, cold beer and the salty ambience of this outpost. Shuckers who stand behind the counter and expertly open each mollusk, presenting them to diners with an almost comical reverence. Fresh oysters are the draw, but non-lovers can choose from favorites including red beans, gumbo and Boo ... more

This restaurant focuses on an American menu and is most sought for their seafood. Expect the average entrée to cost under $8.

A rough-edge classic in every way, this no-nonsense eatery at the entrance to the French Quarter is a prime source for cool and salty raw oysters on the half shell; shrimp, oyster, and roast-beef po'boys; and state-of-the-art red beans and rice. Table service, once confined to the main dining room out front, is now provided in the rear room as well. Expect rather lengthy lines at the marble-top oyster ... more

The Quarter's oldest oyster bar needed a $2-million renovation to recover from Katrina-related issues, but it looks pretty much as it always did, just spiffier (new floor, new tiling, new bathrooms, and best of all, newly expanded kitchen). This joint is always loud, often crowded, and the kind of place where you're likely to run into obnoxious fellow travelers. But if you need an oyster fix or you ... more

OK, Come on people...I have eaten raw oysters in Boston at Le Ole Union Oyster House, and they were pretty good. I have eaten them on the bay in San Francisco and they were good as well. But....ACME Oyster House in New Orleans beats them all!!!! First of all, the location...French Quarter..Hello???? Second, we took our 8 yr old son with us for dinner, and the line was long but moved very fast, even ... more

This restaurant was recommended to me and so on Saturday (July 21, 2007) I went to dinner with my group. We totaled 8. The address is 724 Iberville St. The host was nice and we ate pretty well. Once we paid we were planning on going to Bourbon Street and it started to rain horribly. We thought we would have drinks at the bar inside the restaurant and the manager rudely told us we were taking up space ... more

i came here for lunch recently and had the 1/2 and 1/2 platter of fried catfish and shrimp. there really was nothing to complain about. the food was just perfectly done and not dry. the service was prompt; there was no line when i went (although there usually is -- we just got lucky). our server was also down to earth and friendly and helpful. too bad we couldn't get dessert because the huge servings ... more

Such a semi-famous name as Acme needs to serve a terrific po-boy but falls way short. I think most locals stopped going here around 1995. Fried oysters are dark brown / overcooked. If you must go, stick to the raw oysters and char grilled oysters and maybe some jambalaya and red beans. It's designed for the turistas nowadays. 2007 UPDATE: Post-storm Acme is back to GOOD again! Chargrilled oysters ... more
