Gilded Age Splendor - And Lighting

Review Rating
The Driskill Hotel is down the road from the Texas State House (supposedly because it housed a 19th. century Gentleman's Club patronized by cattle barons). The building was saved from destruction and lovingly restored to its Victorian splendor, which unfortunately, despite the modern lighting still is a little dim, almost by gaslight. It is a truly remarkable building just to wander around with a lot of atmosphere and romance. The bar upstairs and the 1806 cafe are both lovely to look at and spend some time in. The hotel is conveniently located if you are exploring Austin by foot or car. It's a short walk to all of the live music, clubs and restaurants you could possibly want to see. I would definitely stay there again if I return to Austin.

The 1886 was once the gathering point for pretty much all of Austin. With its diner-cafe feel, most flocked to The Driskill's lobby for wholesome food, the quality bar and the friendly atmosphere. The now revived 1886 Cafe and Bakery is no different. Walk across the chequered tile floor and take a seat beneath the art-deco chandeliers. The 1886 Bakery opens early and offers great chocolate croissants ... more

In Short The Driskill Hotel was built in 1886 by cattle baron Col. Jesse Driskill. The downtown hotel has become something of a tradition for Texas governors; it has hosted several inaugural balls. The lobby awes visitors with grandeur, while guests and locals sip cocktails at the piano bar. The rooms in the original hotel and the ones in the newer Driskill Tower are romantically and richly ... more

Presidents, writers, actors and other celebrated faces dine at these tables, presided over by the jowly portraits of former governors. My first time in the restaurant was about 3 months ago, it was a good experience, good food, good service.
This time around we sat and wait for about 10 mins until a waiter came an greeted us. Then my friend ordered a cocktail while I waited for the wine list, I ordered the wine, they brought the wine back and they still didn't serve the cocktail until we asked a second time for the drink. Then we ... more
