Help us make it rightThe concept of the restaurant is everything old school, using what they had and doing as they did before the break of the industrial revolution: approximately 1850.
Made from scratch, by hand - as it would have been circa pre-1850's era. Ingredients are seasonal, and come from within a 150-mile radius. See our sample menus on our website!
Michael Sohocki cut his cooking teeth in Andrew Weissman’s kitchens --- including revered Le Rêve. Due to Weissman’s departure for Pearl, Sohocki is now back in that same kitchen with his own restaurant, named after his grandmother. But the chef also honors the past when it comes to his culinary vision: no devices developed after 1850 are allegedly admitted. In addition, only (primary) products...

I was a little hesitant about Gwendolyn based on its local products/1850 technology reputation, fearing beets and turnips might be our limited fare. Not to worry! Each course was creative and flavorful. The wine pairings were pleasing and service thoughtful. We had symphony tickets that evening and, although nothing was hurried, attention was paid to our need to depart on time. Gwendolyn does a...
Restaurant Gwendolyn had been on our list of places to go for a while. Restaurant week allowed us to experience a three-course meal at an exceptional value. Everything they served was thoughtfully prepared as well as a visual and culinary delight. Nothing else like it in San Antonio.
Gwendolyn is upfront about their "locally sourced fresh food", a very chic/popular move right now. However, in San Antonio that means turnips and beets in January as well as other unusual takes such as beet sorbet for dessert. If you're looking for a unique and new dining experience (for SA), this could be your place. I liked everything, but I've eaten lots of "local fresh food" such as fried...
The restaurant is small and quaint. All of the food is cooked only with the utensils and equipment available in the 1850s. But above all else, the staff was amazing. I have a poultry allergy. I have never had any restaurant staff take the care that our waitress and the kitchen staff took to make sure my meal allowed me to taste as many options as possible and warned me when there were items I...
The food was good, but not outstanding, and the way the dishes are named on the menu, means you have to ask the server to explain almost every dish! Not a great way to do things. Hi faulting names but not hi fault in food!

Everything made by the classic methods, using only preparations that existed in San Antonio in 1850. We are the reflection of Old Texas in a graceful, romantic setting by the river.
Restaurant Gwendolyn manages to create amazing seasonal dishes without the use of anything that plugs into the wall. That's right - no mixers, no deep fryers, and no blenders. The restaurant is committed to keeping food simple and fresh, so the menu changes as seasonal ingredients change. Examples of the kinds of dishes you may find when you visit include a golden beet and seared fennel salad,...
